Carbon Fiber Sheet
Yes, there really is a world-wide shortage of carbon fiber, with the majority of the available carbon fabric being consumed by the aerospace industry. This has caused a dramatic increase in the price of quality carbon fiber. Be aware that all carbon fiber on the market is not created equally. Carbon fiber fabric must be stored in refrigerators and actually has a "shelf life." Near the end of its life, (or after), this fabric may be available at what seems to be a "deal." If this out-of-date pre-preg is manufactured once much of the epoxy resin has dried, the pressed sheets will probably contain pits and voids not always visible on the surface. The material may also be brittle. You won't know you have an inferior product until after you have purchased it.
In spite of these headaches, Halpern Titanium continues to search for quality carbon fiber at a reasonable price for our customers. Our composite material is produced using carbon fiber fabrics and epoxy resin in high pressure hydraulic presses under extremely high temperatures. The result is a structurally rigid, but lightweight material that is aesthetically pleasing with a multitude of uses.
Plain Weave SheetsThis over-under "checkerboard" pattern is our most popular weave, manufactured with a smooth glossy finish. We mask the sheets to minimize any scratching of the surface. (We stock small pieces of .125" plain weave carbon fiber for our consumer/hobbyist market.)
Twill Weave, Satin Weave or Basket Weave Sheets are also available at comparable prices.
Uni-Directional Carbon - For some applications, this woven graphite material can be used as the core for the above weaves, reducing your costs substantially. However, we do not recommend this for any manufactured parts that will be 3D machined.
Textured Finish - Carbon fiber sheets are also available with a textured surface. The original purpose for a textured surface was to increase surface area for improved bonding between two surfaces. Its new practical use of increase grip has become very popular for handgun grips and sport knife handles. (See G-10)
Standard Sheet Sizes are 4 ft. x 6 ft. or 4 ft. x 8 ft. Sheets are manufactured to customer specs from as thin as .063" to as thick as .500" Minimum order is one full sheet of either size.
